The Crooked Spire
The Musical
The Crooked Spire medieval murder mysteryWe are delighted to bring our first full musical production to Chesterfield’s Pomegranate Theatre from 19th – 21st May 2022. The music and lyrics have been written by our Artistic Directors Martin Coslett and Peter Gray and script, by our amazing stage-writing partner, Mary Hennessey- Berrisford.
The story is set in 14th century Chesterfield, as the town recovers from the devastating impact of the plague. Families have been torn apart and money is short, but the prospect of a grand new spire on top of St Mary and All St’s Church inspires hope of a brighter future.
But all is not rosy for our hero, John the carpenter, who has travelled all the way from York to seek work.
Before long John is accused of murdering the Master Carpenter and is thrust into the role of super sleuth in order to clear his name. As he gets closer to the truth further murders are committed and John’s life is in danger. John is helped along the way by new friend, Walter, the brother of a local seamstress, Katherine, who has caught John’s eye. But will our hero survive and justice prevail? Will John win the heart of a good Chesterfield lass? Come along and see for yourself.
The gripping storyline and some belting songs are sure to have you and the family gripped from the opening scenes. We are delighted to have an outstanding creative team working with us, including our Director, Jake Smith, who worked on Sting’s Last Ship and a touring production of Sleepy Hollow, and Musical Director, Harry Style.
With an incredible cast of established actors from screen and stage, such as Gerard Fletcher (BBC’s Get Out and Happy Valley) and John Conway (Wizard of Oz, Trinity Theatre and the film, The World’s End), as well as a raft of local talent, the show is sure to entertain the whole family.
The musical is based on Chris Nickson’s novel, The Crooked Spire, and Chris will be joining us to take questions from the audience following the Matinee on Saturday 21st May.
